Building An Addition: A Homeowner's Guide

Purchased a New Home? How to Increase Your Curb Appeal

by Toni Richards

If you just purchased a new home you may be concentrating on the interior but you need to also focus on the exterior. This is the first thing people see when they pull into your driveway, and you want them to have a good impression before they walk through your door. If you ever plan to sell your new home in the future, this can also help it sell faster. Below is some information about this so you can make your exterior beautiful.

If your home has the standard asphalt driveway you can dress it up to make it more appealing. One thing you can do is to put an acid stain on the concrete. This will completely change the color so you can match it up to your home or surroundings. You can also install the acid stain on your own and it can be purchased at home improvement stores.

The stain will come with instructions on how to apply it. The acid is applied first because this etches the concrete so the stain will adhere much better to it. One benefit of acid stain is it does not completely cover the concrete as it is a clear color so you can have the color but still the look of concrete. When you are finished, you will have a beautiful glossy finish on your driveway. There are many stain colors you can choose from.

Another thing you can do is to stamp the driveway. If you have a large driveway you should consider hiring a concrete contractor to stamp it for you. You can use stamps to make your driveway look like it is made of pavers, slate, brick, and more.

To install the stamps, the contractor first puts a thin layer of texture over the concrete and then they stamp it with the stamps that you chose. This involves laying the stamp on the texture and keeping it there for a certain amount of time. The stamp is then gently lifted.

Talk to companies like Stephens & Smith Construction Inc that specialize in decorative concrete for more information.

Flowers can instantly brighten up landscaping and give it aesthetic appeal. If your yard currently has no flowers you can plant some annuals to quickly have beautiful flowers. Some annuals that grow fast include petunias, zinnias, vincas, marigold, and cosmos.

You could plant the flowers across the front of your home or build a flower bed.  If you choose to have a flower bed, you should consider planting perennials in it also. These do not grow as quickly but they will provide you with flowers year after year. Some perennials that are easy to grow include daylilies, black eyed Susans, coneflowers, peony, and tick seed.

Visit a garden center in your area to learn of the flowers that grow well in your region. Consider the sun requirements also as you do not want to plant shade flowers in an area that gets direct sun all day.

These two tips are a great way to get started increasing your curb appeal. Go outside and determine other things you can do.
